One of the most exquisite fashion shows in history took place on Sunday, August 29th, 2021. The highlight of the weekend extravaganza culminated with Dolce & Gabbana showcasing their Fall 2021 Alta Moda fashion show in the heart of Venice, Italy’s St. Mark’s Square. The reason for the venue and location choice as stated by the designers was “It is the city of Casanova, of the Carnival, of historic. Regatta on the grand canal.”
This unique fashion show experience began with presenting the star-studded guest list of more than 400, widely attended by some of the biggest celebrities dressed in all-out glitz and glamour themselves, including Jennifer Lopez, Kourtney Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Doja Cat, Dame Helen Mirren, Kitty Spencer and Christian Bale to a pre-show performance by singer Jennifer Hudson as they were seated at café like tables to be spectators at the event. Using the natural beauty and splendor of the outdoor picturesque setting that looks as though it’s fresh out of an oil painting, Gondoliers carried the models arriving at the pier ready to take the illuminated runway. They were dressed in rich, ornate fabrics and textures, bejeweled and adorned from head to toe in stunning accessories. Even the kin of catwalk and famous royalty participated in walking the show, notably Leni Klum, daughter of supermodel Heidi Klum who captured the moment and posted it on Instagram, among others to the classical soundtrack of Vivaldi’s, The Four Seasons and the sun setting in the background.
Inspiration for the Haute Couture magnificent creations from the latest collection of over 100 looks were drawn from the history of the iconic city itself baring resemblances to Murano glass and patterns on the floor of the San Marco Cathedral. The skyline of Venice was even painted watercolor-like on one of the Cinderella-style gowns that made an appearance. Other symbols such as the regal lion and carnival masks also graced the moving works of splendid artistry that captivated the audience. The unmistakability of Italian craftsmanship and elegance were seen in the appliques, embroidery, and brocade ropes used on the expertly chosen fabrics. The highest quality satin, tulle, velvet, and sequins were matched with three-dimensional accents for a sartorial feast that is elevated beyond fashion of epic proportions.

The show, which can even be viewed on YouTube now, featured a mix of luminous ball gowns, dazzling minis dresses, oversized embellished blazers, and theatrical costumes. Grand headpieces crowned several of the breath-taking looks. Statement jewelry and footwear encrusted with crystals were styled as part of each ensemble that was delivered nonstop, one after another. The color palette ranged from rich saturated jewel-tone colors and soft pastel hues to shiny metallics for a spectrum bursting with every color imaginable. It’s nearly impossible to choose a favorite design from the ethereal selections. Not to be excluded, men’s bespoke fashion was also featured in the show as well with similarly themed garb.
Even Mother Nature got in on the act. Just as dusk approached and the curtain was about to come down, thunder rumbled and the skies opened up with raindrops falling. Luckily, it held out long enough for the show to close. However, as things were wrapping and chunks of hail fell from above, guests scattered to take coverage disrupting the atmosphere and putting a damper on the festivities. As if it had only been perfectly planned, following the showers, was a spectacular rainbow that appeared after. Once the weather passed, to conclude the ceremonies, a dinner party attended by guests took place.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been quoted in a previous statement to Vogue Magazine saying “Everyone Thinks Couture Is For The Old, But That’s Not How It Has To Be.” Wanting to bring a fresh feel to it by incorporating the offspring of celebrities as models, selecting a fairy tale destination, and inviting A-listers surely did the trick. Clearly, by the viral coverage, this show has received worldwide, it was an astounding success!
After a couple of years of luxury fashion designers having to change the format and host their shows virtually due to being sidelined by the ongoing pandemic, this return to in-person viewing celebrates the occasion and proves that fashion is back and bigger than ever!
